STEP 22 – UPSET STOMACH

broken image

Head tension, tiredness, and muscle soreness are not the only physical symptoms of low mood. Digestive issues can also be a problem.

Symptoms of an UPSET STOMACH include gas, bloating, nausea, sluggish bowels, overactive bowels, and increased or decreased appetite.

The gut is intrinsically linked to our mental health and is very sensitive to the emotions we experience; it even has a role in the way we feel, through synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

It is estimated that ninety percent of serotonin is made in the gut and this mood modulating chemical is essential to normal mental health. This brain chemical helps us to relax and feel positive. The term “gut feeling” relates to the connection between our mind and our gut: an instinct or intuition, a feeling or reaction without a logical rationale.

When our gut is not functioning optimally, it can affect the bacteria in our gut and the synthesis of brain neurotransmitters. An overpopulation of bad bacteria can be detrimental to gut health and make us feel low in mood and tired, as well as giving rise to unhealthy digestive symptoms.
