STEP 23 – BRAIN HEALTH

broken image

There is a definite change in the body’s BRAIN biochemistry when one has been experiencing severe low mood for a period of time.

Studies have shown that there is also abnormal activity and changes in the brain itself. Levels of brain neurotransmitters start to decline. Elevated cortisol levels in response to stress can cause the hippocampus of the brain, the memory center, to produce fewer neurons, and this can cause memory loss.

The prefrontal cortex at the very front of the brain has been shown to shrink when excess cortisol is present for long periods of time. This part of the brain is responsible for mood regulation, formation of memories, and planning and decision making. This can explain symptoms of brain fog, emotional highs and lows, and problems planning and executing daily tasks and responsibilities.

Ongoing exposure to high levels of cortisol can also cause another part of the brain, the amygdala, to become enlarged and hyperactive, which, in turn, causes hormonal imbalances in other areas of the body. This area of the brain facilitates emotional responses like fear and pleasure. Changes in the amygdala can cause abnormal brain activity which can disrupt sleep.

Brain function also relates to the obsessive and repetitive focusing on one thought or a series of thoughts without completion. This can impair the ability to think and process emotions in a healthy way, and this in turn can be very isolating, intensifying an already severe low mood.

Of course, it isn’t just thoughts and feelings that can impair proper brain function. Structural damage caused by head injury, surgery, alcohol and drug use, or underlying medical conditions can also predispose someone to periods of severe low mood. Treatment options in conjunction with a health professional are usually effective or can be managed.
