STEP 25 – LOW MOOD IN TEENAGERS

broken image

Severe low mood in TEENAGERS is becoming an alarming worldwide trend, and rates of severe low mood in 18-to-24-year-olds is higher than in any other age group.

The good news is that most young people experiencing severe low mood can get better with the right help. While some days will be better than others, they can, with the proper support, get back to enjoying daily life.

It can be difficult to distinguish between persistent low mood and normal adolescent turmoil, especially as teenagers are forging new roles within the family and may be struggling with independence, academic studies, career decisions, peer groups, and fluctuating moods, among others.

Some adolescents may not show the obvious signs of severe low mood we discussed earlier but may instead behave uncharacteristically. This may be a sign that they need extra support and help.

Behaviorally, they may become increasingly socially withdrawn, fall behind in school studies or performance, forgo sleep for Internet use, engage in risky behavior (e.g., reckless driving), or even immoral activities such as drug and alcohol abuse, or premarital sexual involvements or behavior.

If you see signs of self-harming in someone you know, or if a young person expresses suicidal thoughts, it’s important that they talk to someone they trust, such as a family member, pastor, friend, teacher, or health professional, who can help them to cope with difficult emotions and work out a plan to keep them safe.

Some teens may not be willing to discuss how they are feeling, so one option is to provide books or printed material about websites and organizations. This can be useful, as can letting them know that you are willing to listen if they feel like talking.

Essential Oils can be helpful to keep teens and their feelings stable and secure. The blends in the EMOTIONAL AROMATHERAPY SYSTEM make emotional aromatherapy easy and accessible for anyone dealing with common negative emotions.
